Project Coordinated by Customer Service TeamCommercial Roof Replacement on Fire Station in Superior, Colorado
The Problem
The fire station on South Indiana Street in Superior, CO had been taking on hail damage for years, and by early 2022 the roof was showing it. Bill, the maintenance manager for Mountain View Fire Rescue, reached out to get the building's roof assessed after missing shingle sections, damaged vent caps, and extensive damaging hail impacts strikes had significantly reduced the service life of the roof.

With significant hail damage to the roof,
What We Did
For this project, WestPro installed GAF ArmorShield II Class 4 impact-resistant shingles in Barkwood across the full roof of Mountain View Fire Rescue's Station 5 on South Indiana Street in Superior, CO. Bill and his team chose GAF ArmorShield II specifically because of its Class 4 hail resistance rating, which made sense given the building's history of storm damage. The Class 4 designation also positioned the fire district to pursue an insurance discount on future premiums, helping offset the cost of the upgrade.
One detail that added significant complexity to the job: when the crew began tearing off the old shingles, they discovered the previous installer had used ice and water shield across the entire roof surface as underlayment rather than standard felt. In this unique case, the ice and water shield was wrinkeled and deteriorated in a way that prevented the new shingles from laying properly. This created labor-intensive process that added roughly 28 extra man-hours to the prep work alone. The crew also had to remove and reset training platforms mounted on the back side of the roof, which required installing eight additional pipe jacks for the platform mounts. A three-story tower section on the building presented a difficult access point that required a specialized ladder setup to avoid bringing in lift equipment. Despite those surprises, the installation passed its final inspection, and WestPro worked directly with the insurance adjuster to document and recover the additional labor costs so the fire district wasn't left holding the bill for complications caused by the previous roof's installation.
Project Details
The roof on this commercial fire station building is a steep-slope system spanning multiple sections, including a three-story tower that required specialized access. The previous roof had ice and water shield installed across the entire surface as underlayment, and training platforms were mounted on the back side of the roof.
