James Hardie Siding Replacement in Fort Collins, CO – Replacing Original 1984 Wood Siding

The Problem

This Fort Collins home was built in 1984 and still had its original wood lap siding. Woodpeckers had started pecking through boards in several spots, and the homeowner was initially thinking about a repair and repaint rather than a full replacement.

Why It Needed Replacing

After walking the property with the homeowner, our consultant found enough age and damage across the exterior that patching and repainting original 40 year old wood siding no longer made sense. The woodpecker damage combined with the siding's age pointed toward full replacement instead of another round of repairs. The homeowner compared a competing quote for LP SmartSide but decided to move forward with James Hardie fiber cement.

What We Did

We completed a full siding replacement on this Fort Collins home, tearing off one layer of existing siding down to the sheathing and hauling away all debris. After inspecting the exterior sheathing, we performed a full re-sheath across the home. We applied HardieWrap breathable weather barrier over the new sheathing and taped all seams, then installed PVC trim coil flashing at the windows, masonry junctions, and belly bands per James Hardie specifications.

We installed James Hardie 7" Cedarmill Lap siding in Aged Pewter across the whole house. Trim was finished in the Cedarmill profile, with window and door trim and outside corner trim in Arctic White and inside corner trim in Aged Pewter. We removed the existing soffit and fascia and replaced the soffit with James Hardie soffit in Arctic White. The fascia was coil wrapped in Arctic White to match. Mounting boxes for the home's light fixtures, water spigots, and electrical outlets were finished in Aged Pewter to blend with the new siding.

The existing gutters were left in place. No window or door replacement was included in the signed scope, and the existing storm windows and trim were carefully removed and reinstalled around the new siding rather than replaced.

Project Details

This is a two-story home required about 1,580 sq ft of James Hardie siding to complete the full exterior wrap. The project was completed on June 19, 2025.

The Result

The project wrapped up over about five working days. Megan and her family stayed in good spirits throughout, and the crew worked efficiently with strong communication along the way. A few finishing touches, including some board swaps and additional caulking, were addressed during the final walkthrough before signoff. Megan indicated she plans to share her experience in a review, and mentioned her parents may reach out to WestPro for their own project down the road.

Projects like this are typical for older Fort Collins homes still carrying their original wood siding, and are representative of the work WestPro completes across the Front Range every day.

Price Context

This siding replacement was completed at approximately $25.60 per sq ft installed. That figure reflects more than material and labor for the lap siding itself. It includes full tear-off and haul-away, a complete re-sheath of the exterior walls, HardieWrap and trim coil flashing, whole-house soffit replacement with new venting, and fascia coil wrap, all bundled into one project.

Homeowners considering a comparable James Hardie ColorPlus siding replacement in Colorado today should generally expect pricing between $19.00 and $23.00 per sq ft installed for the siding itself, with re-sheathing, soffit, and fascia work priced as additional scope on top of that baseline.

Pricing can vary depending on product selection, home size and design complexity, number of stories, site access, whether the existing sheathing needs full replacement, trim and venting upgrades, and permit and building code requirements.

An accurate price requires a site inspection and project-specific estimate. Schedule an inspection.
