James Hardie Siding Replacement, Entry Door, Window Replacement, & Gutter Installation in Boulder, CO – James Hardie Panel Siding

Siding, Window, and Door Replacement in Boulder, CO – Getting the Color Story Right on a Multi-Trade Project

The Problem

Tom reached out to us because the exterior of his Boulder home was showing serious signs of age and neglect. The house was built in 1972, and the original wood siding had not been maintained well over the decades. This two-story  home on Kellogg Circle in Boulder still had its original vertical panel siding in a tan, weathered finish, along with a bold red double entry door and white trim throughout. Up close, the trim and fascia showed real wear including cracked and peeling paint at the joints, rotted wood along the fascia boards and porch beam, a deteriorated window sill, and gutters packed with pine needles and debris. The windows were also not up to code and were not sealed properly, while the existing gutters were too small and the downspouts were not directing water away from the foundation correctly. The old siding had simply reached the end of its useful life, and patching the damaged areas would not address the widespread wear, rot, and failing weather barrier across the entire structure.Tom and his wife Patty worked with WestPro over several months to plan a full exterior update including new James Hardie Board and Batten siding, a new entry door, and a kitchen window replacement.

Why it needed replacing

The scope  of this exterior renovation was driven by a homeowner-led exterior update rather than storm or damage-related repair. A spot repair was not a lasting fix because the existing wood siding and substrate were compromised by rot and water damage throughout. Replacing the siding with new James Hardie panels allowed us to replace damaged wall sheathing with new OSB where needed, bringing the home's exterior envelope up to current standards and ensuring a durable, unified finish that matches across all surfaces. Similarly, not only were the windows not properly sealed, but they also didn’t meet code requirements in the City of Boulder. Because so many elements of the home needed to be addressed simultaneously, it made more sense for Patty and Tom to do a complete exterior renovation where they could properly phase the installation of project and control the outcome of the final design.

What we did

We began by inspecting and  removing the old siding and repairing the substrate, installing new OSB wall sheathing where the old material was damaged. Our team then applied new drip edge along the eaves and rakes and installed new roof vents to improve attic airflow. We  then wrapped the home with a weather barrier. Once the home was properly prepared for installation we began by installing

For the trim and accents, we used James Hardie HardieTrim in Arctic White and Iron Gray to create contrast against the darker siding.  We finished the siding with a Night Gray belly band to create a clean transition between the panels needed to install board and batten and frieze boards to complete the look with a clean transition between the siding and soffits. We  also installed James Hardie soffit panels in Cedarmill, Arctic White, across all eaves and rakes, with 8"x16" aluminum soffit vents. The porch soffit was left in place, since that area was slated to be painted rather than resided.

To manage drainage, we hung a new 6-inch Seamless Aluminum Gutter System around the perimeter of the home. The project also included the installation of a new Provia picture window above the kitchen sink to increase the ventilation to the kitchen. We replaced the main entry door with a 20-gauge smooth steel Provia entry door with decorative glass sidelights to increase the natural light in the entry way while maintaining privacy in the home. Finally, we partnered with a trusted painting contractor to paint the existing brick features including portions of siding as well as  the brick chimney. To ensure this tied into the overall color scheme the brick pillars on the garage face and the chimney were kept in Iron Gray, while the brick facing around the living room windows and the back brick wall were painted Night Gray to match the new siding. The shed and the back porch ceiling and beams were also painted as part of this scope.

During the project, WestPro identified damage to Tom's driveway from material and dumpster drop-off. Rather than leave it as a loose end, WestPro worked with Tom and Patty to find a resolution that worked for them, offering the choice of either having the driveway professionally repaired at WestPro's cost or taking an equivalent amount off the final invoice. Tom chose the invoice credit, which is a real example of WestPro's money-back guarantee in practice when something on a job doesn't go exactly as planned.

Project Details

This four bedroom home home on Kellogg Circle in Boulder  involved a comprehensive exterior update covering 1,970 square feet of siding and trim. The work spanned 19 window and door openings, with 16 inside corners and 7 outside corners to detail. The project also included replacing the gutters along 196 linear feet of the roofline , with 60 feet of downspout across 4 downspouts. The full scope of siding, windows and door, gutters, and paint was completed in April 2025.

Materials Used

Price Context- Siding & Gutters

This project was completed at approximately $23 per sq. ft. installed for the James Hardie Board and Batten siding, using the ColorPlus factory-finished rate. Night Gray is a Statement Collection ColorPlus color. That price covers full tear-off of the existing siding, housewrap, flashing, trim, HardiePanel with integrated batten strips, permit, and installation labor.

Homeowners considering a similar project today should generally expect pricing between $21.50–$26.00/sq ft installed for ColorPlus-finished James Hardie Board and Batten siding. Choosing primed Board and Batten instead of ColorPlus lowers the material rate somewhat, but adds the cost of a separate field-painting contract afterward, which typically runs several thousand dollars more once labor and prep are factored in. As a result, ColorPlus often ends up being  the more cost-effective choice once painting is accounted for, not just the more convenient one.

ricing varies based on the siding profile and exposure, the trim package, wall complexity, existing-siding removal requirements, sheathing repairs, and any soffit or fascia work bundled with it. Board and batten is one of the most popular siding styles on the Front Range right now, with clean vertical lines and a modern or farmhouse look. On this particular home, the signed contract bundled the siding, gutter replacement, soffit, fascia, and LeafPro leaf guards together as one scope, so the rate above reflects the siding material and installation specifically, not an even split of the full contract.

Homeowners considering a similar 6-inch Seamless Aluminum Gutters project in Colorado should generally expect pricing in the range of $24.00–$26.00/LF installed. Pricing varies based on the total linear footage, the number of downspouts, gutter size, drainage improvements, and site access. This home has steep roof sections and large drainage areas that push more water volume than standard 5-inch gutters can handle efficiently. Upsizing to 6-inch prevents overflow during heavy Colorado rainstorms and snowmelt.

For pricing on windows and doors, you can refer to our window replacement price guide, or call a member of our team to evaluate what it would cost to replace the windows or doors on your home. An accurate price for any of the trades carried out for this project requires a site inspection and project-specific estimate  the best next step is a free, no-obligation inspection.

The Result

Tom and his wife Patty were happy with the work throughout the project. They were excited about the extra natural light the new entry door brought into the house, and glad to finally have an operable window over the kitchen sink after years with a fixed picture window that offered no ventilation. Perhaps the clearest sign of how the job read from the outside and what the couple shared with neighbors. In fact, a neighbor directly across the street liked what he saw enough to sign his own siding contract with WestPro before this project was even finished.

Evaluating the Design

The home’s original vertical panel siding in a faded tan, white trim that had cracked and peeled at the joints, a rotted porch beam, a worn window sill, and gutters clogged with debris, all fronted by a bold red double entry door that stood apart from the rest of the muted, dated exterior. Once the project was complete, the home had completely transformed. James Hardie Board and Batten siding in a deep charcoal Night Gray, crisp Arctic White trim frame every window with brick painted to match the new dark palette, and a slate-blue Provia entry door with a leaded decorative glass insert and matte black hardware in place of the old red door.

The biggest single change in how the home reads from the street is the shift from a light, dated tan exterior to a confident, dark, monochromatic one. Night Gray board and batten now reads as the dominant color across every elevation, with Arctic White trim doing the work of outlining each window and roofline cleanly against it without dominating the colorsheme. The brick that once stood out in its own untouched color was painted to match the new dark scheme, including the chimney, so the whole house reads as one continuous material rather than several unrelated ones stacked together. Where the old red door fought with everything around it, the new slate-blue door sits comfortably inside that same dark, cohesive palette.
