James Hardie Siding Replacement in Estes Park, CO - Board and Batten Design with Shingle Accent

The Problem

This home on Ute Lane in Estes Park, CO had an exterior built with thick styrofoam insulation board wrapped in a thin layer of stucco, along with wood shake shingles in the gables. Over time, birds had pecked through the stucco and into the foam in multiple places, leaving the exterior damaged in several spots. The homeowner found WestPro through a Google search while looking for a siding installer experienced with James Hardie fiber cement. No insurance claim was filed on this project.

Why It Needed Replacing

Foam-and-stucco siding systems don't hold up once birds or woodpeckers find a weak point, and this exterior had been compromised in multiple areas. Patching individual holes wasn't a lasting fix since the material underneath was already exposed in several spots, and more damage was likely. A full reside with a durable, impact-resistant material was the only way to permanently solve the problem.

What We Did

The project covered a full reside of the home, removing the stucco-over-foam siding and wood shake gables and replacing them with James Hardie board and batten. Soffit, fascia, and gutters were left in place as part of the agreed scope.

The primary siding was installed using James Hardie Board and Batten in Arctic White, built from Hardie 4' x 10' CedarMill panels with 4/4 2.5" Rustic battens. A 5/4 5.5" Rustic belly band was added across the elevations as a design detail, and 4/4 3.5" Rustic trim was used to finish the board and batten sections. The gables were finished with James Hardie 7" staggered edge shingle panels in Mountain Sage, and Arctic White HardieTrim was used throughout to complete window and door openings, corners, and roofline transitions.

Project Details

The home is a two-story mountain residence with 3,771 sq. ft. of combined siding and trim scope once openings and roofline trim are included. The exterior includes 43 window and door openings across a complex, multi-gable roofline. The project was completed in February 2023.

The Result

This project was completed by WestPro Home Exteriors in February 2023. The finished exterior replaced a failing, bird-damaged stucco system with durable, impact-resistant James Hardie siding, giving the home a clean, mountain-appropriate look with the Arctic White board and batten and Mountain Sage shingle gables. Projects like this are common throughout Estes Park and the surrounding mountain communities, where foam-and-stucco exteriors are prone to bird and woodpecker damage and often require a full reside to permanently resolve.

Price Context

This project is representative of a James Hardie ColorPlus board and batten replacement in the Estes Park area. Homeowners can generally expect to pay $22–$27 per sq. ft. installed for James Hardie ColorPlus board and batten siding with shingle accents. That rate covers full tear-off and disposal, housewrap, HardieTrim, mounting hardware, permit, and all labor. Mountain properties with steep driveways, difficult material access, or HOA design requirements often land toward the higher end of that range. It does not include structural repairs, resheathing, or window replacement, any of which would affect the total cost.
