James Hardie Siding Replacement on Bowen Street in Longmont, CO - Shingle Accent Design

The Problem

Gail's home on Bowen Street in Longmont, CO is a character-rich property built in 1910, with a detached studio that had already been updated with James Hardie staggered edge shingle siding. The original section of the main house still had old clapboard siding that had reached the end of its useful life and no longer matched the updated studio. Gail found WestPro on Google while researching James Hardie siding and came in initially considering a partial replacement or repaint. After a consultation walking through the pros and cons of repairing aging clapboard versus replacing with fiber cement, she moved forward with a full replacement on the main house to bring everything in line with the studio.

Why It Needed Replacing

The clapboard siding on the original section of the home was deteriorating and no longer matched the already-updated detached studio. Patching or repainting aging clapboard on a 100-year-old home is a short-term fix whereas replacing it with fiber cement gave Gail a consistent exterior across both structures and a surface that won't require the same ongoing maintenance cycle.

What We Did

The scope covered the siding replacement on the main house, matching the detached studio that was already clad in James Hardie staggered edge shingle. The existing clapboard was removed and new HardieWrap moisture barrier was installed across the exterior before any siding went up. Where needed, 1/2" OSB sheathing was also replaced to give the new siding a solid substrate. When the walls were opened up, the crew discovered insulation that
needed to be replaced. Gail approved a change order to replace the insulation as needed before siding installation continued.

The primary siding on the main house was installed using Primed James Hardie 7.25" HardiePlank Smooth Lap Siding, to be painted by the homeowner. The staggered edge shingle panels were installed on the front elevation to mirror the detached studio and create a cohesive look across the full property. All trim was installed using James Hardie primed trim board. Aluminum trim coil was used at windows and penetrations to complete the detail work. A Mid America gable vent and dryer vent were also included in the scope.

After WestPro completed the installation, Gail painted the full exterior herself, bringing the lap siding, shingle panels, and trim together in a cohesive finished look.

Project Details

The home at Bowen Street is a multi-story residence built in 1910 with 1,173 sq. ft. of total siding and trim scope. The project included 22 window and door openings, 4 inside corners, and 12 outside corners.

Materials Used

The Result

This project was completed by WestPro Home Exteriors in September 2022. The finished exterior unified the main house with the already-updated detached studio, giving the full property a consistent, well-maintained look. Projects like this are common throughout Longmont's older neighborhoods, where homes built in the early 1900s often have a mix of original and updated materials that need to be brought together.

Price Context

This project is representative of a James Hardie primed siding replacement on an older, multi-structure property in Longmont. Homeowners can generally expect to pay $19–$23 per sq. ft. installed for James Hardie primed lap siding. That rate covers full tear-off and disposal, housewrap, standard HardieTrim, mounting blocks, permit, and all labor. It does not include sheathing repair, insulation replacement, or painting, any of which would affect the total cost. Homes built before 1950 often carry additional variables such as framing conditions, insulation, and mixed material types that can affect scope and pricing.
