GAF Roof Replacement in Erie, CO – "Sticky Insurance" Hail Claim

Project Summary

The Problem

When Jon first contacted us, the roof on his Erie home had clear hail damage from a hailstorm on May 9th, 2023 where Erie saw 2 inch hail hit their community. Our initial inspection was completed on May 26th of 2023. He had not filed a claim at that time, but after replacing his roof in 2013 after a different hailstorm, he knew the direction to go with help from his Project Consultant Diego. Little did they know that his claim would initially be denied by his insurance company.

Our Claims Specialist Eric worked to get a reinspection done with the insurance company as there was clear hail damage on the roof. We got even more photos to provide to the company to indicate that this roof was beyond repair and was compromised due to the hail damage. The insurance was not budging and so Jon decided he wanted to invoke appraisal as every single one of his neighbors had their roof replaced due to the hail damage and he had clear evidence showing he was experiencing the same with his roof. Jon decided this in December of 2023. This process would then last until August of 2025 when the appraisal ended and the claim was accepted and Jon could finally have a roof that he could trust after that hailstorm. We went to immediate work on installing the roof.

Why It Needed Replacing

The amount of damaged sustained to this roof left it irreparable. Replacing only a few squares would have left the rest of the aging roof vulnerable to future leaks and failure, so a complete replacement was the only way to bring the home up to current standards.

What We Did

We began the project by removing the old shingles and preparing the roof deck for new materials. Our team installed ABC Pro Guard 20 Synthetic Underlayment across the roof surface, along with GAF WeatherWatch Leak Barrier and IKO Stormshield Ice and Water Barrier in critical areas. We then applied GAF Pro-Start Starter Strip at the eaves before laying down GAF Timberline ArmorShield II Shingles in Charcoal. These Class 4 impact-resistant shingles provide durable protection against hail and severe weather.

To finish the roof, we installed GAF Seal-A-Ridge AS Ridge Cap Shingles in Charcoal to match the field shingles and complete the peak. The project also included new step flashing, new pipe jack flashing, and new drip edge along the eaves and rakes. We added new roof vents to ensure proper airflow and completed all work to meet local building codes and manufacturer specifications.
